In November of 1965, a father and his adult son set out in deep snow and frigid cold while deer hunting in the Badlands of western North Dakota.  When they reached the cliffs surrounding Bullion Butte, they decided to split up to cover more ground.  The father went to the left and the son to the right.  A couple hours later, the son reached the far side of the butte, but his father was nowhere in sight.  After waiting for as long as his patience and the freezing temperatures would allow, he decided to walk back to where they had originally split up.  From there, he followed his father’s tracks in the deep snow.  Optimistic that his father’s delay may have been a result of him shooting a deer (maybe a big buck?), he wasn’t particularly worried - even with the sun beginning to sink in the sky.  However, as he turned a corner and saw his father seated motionless in the snow, his heart sank.  He called out but received no response.  As he reached his father, it was apparent that he had passed away several hours earlier, likely from a heart attack while hiking in the deep snow.

The two men in this story were the grandfather and great-grandfather of Burnt Creek Watch Company’s founders.  To this day, anytime they catch a glimpse of Bullion Butte while exploring the Badlands, their thoughts go back to the story of their great-grandfather’s passing and what their grandfather went through that day.  The Bullion watch was named in their honor.
